Washington was one of four founding members of the Pac-12 and today, the conference is one of the strongest in the nation with intense and incredible rivalries. Originally known as the Sun Dodgers, the Washington teams wanted to improve the Northwest's image, so in 1922, the nickname Huskies was adopted because of Seattle's close proximity to the Alaskan frontier. The Husky nickname has proven to be appropriate, as it stands for fight and tenacity, character and courage, endurance and willingness, and successfully sums up the Washington teams.
